THE WRITERS ARENA--FINAL DRAFT
The title of the story surfaced in a roundabout way. One of the concepts that was important in the story was a specific kind of shape. I like the idea that quantum factors involved in FTL travel would require the ships to not only be incredibly small (virus-size), but also in the shape of nonagons. The nonagon shape was a plot device to establish a connection to the climactic moment. But I also decided to make color essential to the FTL science and found out there was a color called Midnight Green. That sort of worked for me, but then I realized there could be other color possibilities. I decided to “invent” a color and came up with Abysmal Blue. Lo and behold, it has already been invented. In the end, I used Midnight Blue for the plot, but then added “Abysmal” to the title so that there could be an a-ha moment for the reader during the climactic scene in the Abyss with the protagonist. Anyway, the final title ended up being “Abysmal Midnight Blue.” I had a lot of fun!
