THE ORSON SCOTT CARD WRITERS' BOOT CAMP: ARRIVAL

Got up at 4:30 a.m. to fly out to San Diego. The air is muggy and the sky is overcast. Just as the shuttle pulled into the parking lot of my hotel, I spotted Orson Scott Card jogging. I wasn’t sure until I saw he was wearing a Brigham Young University T-Shirt. I arrived at the hotel early, so I killed several hours until I could check in around 1:00 p.m. The ComiCon (comic book convention) is here. I was told there are about 125,000 people downtown along with a few celebrities.

I called the campground to let my family know I had arrived safely. It was weird to think that Kamp was starting when I was way over here in San Diego.

My room is basically an apartment. It has a full kitchen and two HD TVs. I walked about a mile to get groceries and then scouted out the conference room at the Mariott next door where the lecture part of the week will take place, starting tomorrow morning.

I’m fighting a post-camp cold. My plan is do a little writing, some reading, eat some dinner, take two Nyquil and hit the hay by 10:00 p.m. I have to be at the Mariott between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. to register.

My hotel is right by the airport and strangely enough, it’s very quiet except for the occasional roaring of the jets. At one point, as I crossed the parking lot, the only thing I could hear was a crow perched on a lamp post.

I’ve got a place to live. I’ve got my computer. I’ve got sandwiches. I’m ready to go.

Two HD TVs and you probably won't even turn them on. Good luck with the sandwiches! (pbj?) How fun to walk to the store by yourself in San Diego! I want to do it!
