SONG: The Way I Am (Ingrid Michaelson)

This musician got her big break because of an Old Navy commercial. The sudden attention brought her second album into the limelight. Michaelson is from Staten Island and has been compared to Feist and Regina Spektor. She might also remind you a little of Lisa Loeb, but happier. Definitely coffee house music, built on unique piano and guitar rhythms, with alternative spins. She might be one of the few artists out there with her eyes open. She opened an online forum to discuss the dangers of becoming successful. She said, "If a big bad corporation comes up to me and wants me to be their mascot hopefully I'll be able to do my research and do what I know in my heart to be the right thing." Raised on Beatles, classical music, folk, and show tunes, her songs range from catchy ballads to pensive meditations. Her lyrics are memorable and edgy.

Have you ever thought about what protects our hearts? / Just a cage of rib bones and other various parts. / So it's fairly simple to cut right through the mess, / And to stop the muscle that makes us confess.” (from the song “Breakable”).

However, for your initial dose of Michaelson, listen to “The Way I Am.”

"If you are chilly / Here take my sweater / Your head is aching / I'll make it better / Cause I love the way you call me baby / And you take me the way I am.”

Although seemingly simple, the lyrics somehow take on more power when heard with the music.

Conclusion: The song is child-like and innocent. A whole slew of deeply abstract complicated musical poetry might very well provide more intellectual fodder, but its tunes like this one that stays with you and might very well carry you through a cloudy day.
